"As I was interpreting it, I was like, man, this is a really good message," confides Rose Cousins on her decision to cover Corey Hart`s "Never Surrender" for her Juno 365 session. "When you`re alone and you`re kind of lost, it`s totally fine, just don`t give up, you have the power to keep going."
Cousins is the most recent artist to accept our invitation to cover a single of the year from Junos past. Hart nabbed that award in 1985 for his power ballad "Never Surrender," the first single from Boy in the Box.
"Once I started to learn it, playing it myself and feeling how relevant the message is today, and also thinking about the fact that I feel very lucky to have grown up empowered, to be my own person and to be strong and independent — I just think it`s a great message across the board for anybody who has moments where they`re not sure."
How did she make the song her own? "Where his is kind of like, `We are the Champions,` and it`s amazing, I kind of wanted to play it on piano and
a dynamic where ... the poignant parts of the song, lyrically — you could feel them, in an emotional way that maybe you wouldn`t have in the Corey Hart version."
